Yesterday Alex had to have his 2nd set of tubes put in his ears. The first set was put in in September 07. Since then the right tube had started working its way out and the left tube wasn't functioning anymore. Surprisingly, to me, this time was a little more scary than the last time. I know we did a lot more praying. I guess it's bc he was older and there was the chance that they may have to take his adnoids out, which involved a little more recovery time (or so we thought). They wouldn't know until they started surgery. The surgery was scheduled for 7:30 and we had to be there at 5:30 and he couldn't eat or drink anything. I know he was hungry:) He was crazy in the room. Everytime a nurse or someone new walked in he ran to John or I...he did warm up to one nurse and let her read his book (Skippyjon Jones-anyone else seen it? It's about a kitty boy-VERY STRANGE)to him. They gave him a bear (last time it was a chicken or a duck -we weren't sure so we named it chuck:)) to hold on to but he still didn't want his BP or temperature taken or anything else being done to him. When he got his sedative (ver sed-I don't know how it's spelled) he fought it and wouldn't really calm down and sit like he did before but his head would just roll around and he couldn't walk without falling. It was kind of comical to see him so subdued. We knew when the doctor was gone for so long that they had taken his adnoids out. He came back and told us they cauterized the adnoids and put the tubes in and everything was fine. We got to see him after he spent some time in recovery. He came in with one nurse pushing his bed and one nurse holding him. I guess bc he was too sweet they had to hold him. She handed him to me and said "we'll keep him if you let us." He was so tired from just waking up from the anesthesia. He just layed on me. He drank a little juice and then was out again. We had to stay for them to monitor him for about an hour and a half. He slept most of the time. The nurse came and took his IV out (It was soo sad to see his little hand with the IV all wrapped up-I don't know how parents do it who are in the hospital a lot with their kids-it gave me a new perspective)and then he kind of started waking up. We got him dressed and then headed home. Once he got home he didn't skip a beat. He was running around and playing. John grilled hotdogs and Alex ate his (and the bun) before John could even get to his own hotdog. He must have been hungry. He then went down for his nap like normal and slept for about 3 hrs. It's amazing how he never even acts like he's hurting. He was a little clingy and a little bit today too, but I'm so glad he doesn't seem to be in pain. After his nap he played in his little baby pool and had a blast. We made it a chocolate covered strawberry bubble bath. He loved it!

Oh- that little baby hospital gown! I'm glad he's doing okay. You were very brave, Rachel! I can't imagine having a sick child who required lots of hospital stays.
ReplyDeleteI like that you named the chicken/duck Chuck. Very creative! :)
